Learning for Life

September 8, 2023 | Harvest

It’s the time of year when kids are going back to school, settling into routines of studying and learning. But what about you? Are you studying the Bible and learning new lessons from God’s Word?

The Bible is our timeless source of wisdom, holding the power to transform our lives. Let’s talk about three reasons we should prioritize the continuous study of the Scriptures.

  1. It nourishes our souls.

Just as physical food is essential for our bodies, spiritual nourishment is crucial for our souls. The Bible is a divine feast for our hearts and minds, providing us with spiritual sustenance and guidance. In Matthew 4:4, Jesus reminds us that “people do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” (NLT). The more we immerse ourselves in God’s Word, the more we understand His nature, His promises, and His will for our lives. Studying the Bible quenches the spiritual hunger within us and strengthens our relationship with our heavenly Father.

  1. It gives us wisdom and discernment.

In a world filled with conflicting and deceptive ideas and opinions, the Bible stands as an unchanging source of truth and wisdom. Psalm 119:105 declares, “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path” (NLT). Through the Scriptures, we gain clarity, insight, and discernment in navigating life’s difficulties. The wisdom contained within its pages helps us make decisions that align with God’s will, enabling us to live our lives with purpose. Proverbs 2:6-7 reminds us, “The Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He holds success in store for the upright” (NKJV).

  1. It helps us grow in faith and encourage others.

Studying the Bible deepens our faith and equips us to lift up others spiritually. Romans 10:17 reminds us that “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (NKJV). As we delve into God’s Word, our faith is strengthened, and we are better equipped to share the hope and love of Christ with those around us. The Bible provides us with examples of faith, perseverance, and God’s faithfulness. We can draw inspiration from individuals like Abraham, Moses, and David, who faced trials and triumphed through their trust in God. By studying the Bible, we become vessels of encouragement, pointing others to the hope that only Jesus can offer.

As our kids embark on a new academic year, we as adults should embrace every opportunity to continue our own learning through the study of the Bible. Let’s nourish our hearts and minds with the truths of Scripture—allowing them to shape our thoughts, actions, and character—so that we can shine the light of Christ to a world in need.
