Why Jesus Came

As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, we can find ourselves immersed in the enchanting imagery of the season. Charming nativity scenes, well-designed greeting cards, and endearing Christmas pageants all depict the humble infant Jesus cradled in the arms of Mary and Joseph. We sing of a baby peacefully sleeping in serene surroundings, and it’s a scene that warms our hearts.

But as Pastor Greg has often said, “We have made Christmas too beautiful.” Let’s not forget that Jesus didn’t come into this world merely to be born. His arrival held a profound purpose, a divine mission that would forever change the course of humanity.

Why did Jesus come?

In Luke 4, we find Jesus reading about His mission from the prophet Isaiah, and proclaiming His fulfillment of that prophecy. We learn that Jesus came:

To Preach the Gospel to the Poor
Gospel means “good news.” And the good news is that we, who are spiritually poor and destitute of all goodness, can be saved from our sins through the redeeming work of the Savior.

To Heal the Brokenhearted
Life often inflicts us with heartbreak—shattered relationships, unmet expectations, and broken promises. Whatever weighs down your heart today, know that Jesus possesses the power to heal the deepest wounds.

To Proclaim Liberty to the Captives
What is holding you captive today? Perhaps fear, addiction, or regret? Jesus declared, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36).

To Restore Sight to the Blind
Sin can blind us to the truth and lead us astray. What sins create blind spots in your life? Whether it’s greed, lust, or pride, Jesus can open our eyes to those blind spots, restore sight, and guide us on the path of righteousness.

To Set at Liberty Those Who Are Oppressed
We may believe ourselves to be free, yet we can remain oppressed by external influences: the world, the devil, and even our own expectations. However, Jesus has the power to break these chains of oppression.

To Proclaim the Acceptable Year of the Lord
When is “the acceptable year of the Lord” or “the time of God’s favor”? It is now! As 2 Corinthians 6:2 reminds us, “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” There is coming a time when God’s offer of salvation will no longer be on the table. Let’s be sure to tell others about it while it is still today!

This Christmas, let’s remember that Jesus didn’t come simply to evoke warm and cozy feelings. He embarked on a divine rescue mission, a mission to bring hope, healing, freedom, and salvation to a world in need. As we engage with the poor, the brokenhearted, the captives, the blind, and the oppressed in our lives, let’s emulate Christ’s mission and declare the time of God’s favor.
